A Closer Look at the Science: Presentations You Won't Want to Miss
This presentation will introduce the foundational methods of color reproduction, focusing on spectral and colorimetric specifications, color appearance, and color preference. Participants will explore the advantages and limitations of various color reproduction technologies with particular emphasis on recent advancements such as preferred color rendering, automatic white balance (AWB), HDR mapping, and gamut mapping.
The key highlight of the session is the innovative concept of Individual Color Reproduction (ICR), which aims to deliver personalized color accuracy for individual users. Leveraging spectrally tunable LED light sources, ICR enables precise reproduction of the Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) of any desired lighting environment. Additionally, this technology allows for the characterization of camera spectral sensitivity functions, verification of display quality in terms of RGB spectrum, and accurate quantification of individual color matching functions (CMFs). This revolutionary approach offers an effective solution to the persistent issue of observer metamerism failures, ensuring that color reproduction remains consistent and accurate for individual observers across a wide range of environments.
This presentation will delve into the complexities of human color vision and the significant impact of individual differences on cone spectral sensitivities. These differences arise because of individual variability in factors such as pre-retinal filtering by the lens and macular pigments that alters the spectral power distribution of lights reaching the cones, and in photopigment optical density that changes the width of cone spectral sensitivities. Furthermore, genetic differences can cause spectral shifts in the L- and M-cone spectral sensitivities that alter color appearance.
These individual variations have important implications for color design, reproduction, and display technologies. A simple model, based on the CIE 2006 standard and extended by Stockman & Rider (2024), will be presented to help account for these differences. The model allows for the reconstruction of spectrally continuous cone spectral sensitivities, which can then be applied using Thouslite's LEDMax technology to analyze and estimate individual color matching functions. This enables display devices to be color-corrected for individual observers, ensuring an optimal viewing experience. Additionally, the presentation will address the challenge of mitigating the effects of individual differences when multiple individuals view a single display, such as in a movie theater setting.
