Lighting Cabinet, Multi-channel LED, Daylight & Blackbody Simulator, Image Evaluation, Camera Calibration, Visual Assessment

Thank you to every researcher, industry colleague and visitor who joined THOUSLITE during the CIC34 exhibition in Barcelona. Held on 4 and 5 November as part of the 34th Color and Imaging Conference, the exhibition gave us a valuable opportunity to learn together and exchange ideas. Your thoughtful questions and practical experience enriched our discussions on spectral lighting, visual assessment, individual colour matching and camera characterisation.
Organised by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), CIC34 takes place in Barcelona from 2 to 6 November 2026, with technical presentations at Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s Ciutadella Campus. The programme spans colour perception, image capture and reproduction, material appearance, lighting and multispectral imaging. The exhibition provided a welcoming setting to connect these research topics with experimental tools and practical requirements.
The official programme includes contributions co-authored by Professor Ming Ronnier Luo on display viewing conditions, colour appearance and skin impressions. Learning about these topics alongside our conversations with visitors helped us explore how lighting conditions and research tools can support different experimental needs.
Two light sources can have similar correlated colour temperatures yet different spectral power distributions (SPDs). Those differences can affect the light reflected from a material and the response recorded by a camera or perceived by an observer. Matching colour temperature alone therefore does not establish equivalent illumination for a colour experiment.
Multi-channel LED systems allow the outputs of different spectral channels to be adjusted, offering flexibility in designing and matching lighting conditions. The achievable match depends on the selected configuration and target spectrum, and should be verified through measurement. This gives researchers a more specific basis for discussing illumination than colour temperature alone.
LEDCube supports target-SPD simulation and matching for lighting research, surface colour visual assessment, and camera and sensor evaluation. It helps researchers discuss the spectral composition of their illumination alongside intensity and geometry. The required spectral range, output and measurement feedback should be agreed for each application and device configuration.
LEDView provides a lighting cabinet for comparing material colour under controlled illumination. It supports discussions about viewing conditions for applications such as textiles, coatings, plastics and print. A useful assessment procedure also defines the background, viewing geometry and observer adaptation; source options and applicable requirements should be checked for the selected model.
LEDMax uses Maxwell’s matching method to estimate an individual observer’s LMS cone fundamentals and XYZ colour matching functions from a series of visual matches. It offers an experimental approach to studying individual differences in colour perception, including questions relevant to display research. Interpretation depends on the observers, matching procedure and analysis used.
LEDSSF characterises camera spectral sensitivity and supports colour correction work. Understanding how a camera responds across wavelengths helps researchers examine the interaction between illumination, materials and image capture. This information can inform a characterisation workflow designed around the intended scenes and lighting conditions.
Our photographs capture conference discussions, the THOUSLITE display and exchanges with visitors. Thank you for taking the time to discuss developments in our products and technology, share your experimental experience and raise questions from your own work. We came away with valuable insights into the needs of the colour and imaging community, offering useful perspectives for our product development, technical communication and application support.
We also thank the organisers and fellow participants for creating such an open and welcoming environment for learning. Although the exhibition has ended, we look forward to continuing these conversations, following up on your questions and exploring future opportunities for research and collaboration.
